Extractions are usually classified as simple extractions or surgical extractions:
Simple Extractions
A simple extraction is performed when the tooth can be seen in the mouth. The dentist will use various instruments to slowly loosen the tooth so that it can be removed.

Surgical Extraction
A surgical extraction is performed when the tooth cannot be easily seen in the mouth. This could be due to a fracture at the gumline, severe decay or impaction. In order to see the tooth, an incision will be made and a flap of gum tissue will be pulled back in order to improve visibility of the tooth. After the tooth has been removed, some stitches will be placed in order to help with the healing process.
